Pencoed Fire Station Set to Fight Fire With Fire at Sunday’s Charity Football Tournament

Pencoed Fire Station has entered a team into the 12 hour 5-a-side charity football tournament being held this Sunday at Pencoed Comprehensive School. But the tournament is not the only thing taking place, as we’ve also organised a family fun day which will run at the same time – from 8am to 8pm.

The purpose of both events is to raise much needed funds for local disabled children’s charity, Y Bont. The charity has received cuts to its funding and now needs to raise £50,000 to remain open.

As soon as they heard about the event, Pencoed Fire Station was eager to get involved. Their football squad, which will be known as the Pencoed Fire-fighters, consists of the following players:

    • Chris Dodds (Captain)
    • Elliot Frewen
    • Brian Betts
    • Jason Owens
    • Jason Smith
    • John Gethins
    • Paul Standing

Elliot Frewen works for Y Bont part time, and had the following to say:

“As an employee of Y Bont, I know first-hand the excellent work they do for the children and their families. The progress some of the children make is remarkable and it’s down to the hard work of its staff and families. One of our team members has previously used the service so we are all aware of the great work Y Bont does.

Every few months, Pencoed fire station holds a car wash event to raise money for local charities and groups. The total is split between our chosen charity and our own fire-fighters charity.

In preparation for the tournament itself, we have been training flat out 4 times a week for the past month, with power and plyometric training in the morning and skills and endurance in the evening. We have all adjusted our diets to suit our heavy training schedule, with max carb loading pre training and a good balance of proteins and carbs post training. So nothing too serious - although it would be nice to win.

We don’t believe in trash talk as we are a professional service where only the highest of standards are acceptable… plus there’s no need for trash talk when we’re quite clearly going to win.”

The Pencoed Fire-fighters will undoubtedly have the advantage of fitness on their side come Sunday, but will they be as ruthless as their straight-talking game plan – “divide and conquer”?

You can find out by bringing your family down to Pencoed Comprehensive School, where not only can you choose to watch the entertaining football that will be on offer, but you can also enjoy a day of fun events and activities that will raise crucial funding for an invaluable local charity.
