Y Bont, a disabled children’s nursery charity based in Bridgend, has been awarded charity of the year by Sainsbury’s Bridgend. This means that Y Bont will be given priority to carry out any fundraising activities in-store they like for the next 12 months.

Bridgend, Glamorgan July 10, 2014 – Y Bont has provided care, support and development services for local disabled children for the past 22 years. But now the charity faces closure due to cuts in council funding, and needs to raise £50,000 to remain open. Today, Y Bont’s overarching awareness campaign received a massive boost after it was awarded ‘Charity of the Year’ by Sainsbury’s Bridgend.

Y Bont was originally founded in 1993 by a small group of families who had disabled children them selves. They identified the need for a place where they could meet and where their children could be looked after by qualified and experienced staff. More than 20 years on, 130 families now come to the centre to make use of its services.

After a rough few months an ecstatic Marged Griffiths, Y Bont’s General Manager, commented: “We are absolutely over the moon. It has been a turbulent couple of months to say the least but this news has left everybody beaming. We’ve already got a mountain of fundraising ideas that will hopefully help us to reach our target. We’re so happy and grateful for Sainsbury’s Bridgend for choosing us as their charity of the year – we’ll be able to do so much more with their help. We’ve also received help from other businesses such as AgentPro, ITCS and other local businesses so all in all things are really looking up for Y Bont.”

Y Bont will have priority to use the Sainsbury’s store for any fundraising activities it plans to carry out, such as bag-packing, bake sales and holding book stalls at the store’s main entrance. Sainsbury’s Bridgend also promises to donate 1p of every 5p charged for plastic bags to Y Bont. The children that attend the centre will also be taken on store tours, where they will be involved in baking bread, making pizzas and taking part in a cashier role-play.

The award has arrived at the perfect time for Y Bont, as other local fundraising events in Bridgend are also planned over the next few weeks such as a charity 12 hour 5-a-side football tournament which local companies are participating in, as well as an ‘all welcome’ family fun day which is taking place on July 27th at Pencoed comprehensive school, organised by estate agent software company AgentPro.

The software company has already raised half of its £5,000 target, all of which will go directly to Y Bont.
