Solar Scorpions Enter Charity Football Tournament

Solar Sunshades, a bespoke blinds manufacturer based in Bridgend, has entered their team into our 5-a-side charity football tournament taking place this Sunday, July 27th.

The tournament will run from 8am-8pm and is being held at Pencoed Comprehensive School alongside a family fun day. The purpose of both the tournament and the fun day is to raise money for Bridgend-based disabled children’s charity, Y Bont. The charity has recently undergone cuts to its funding and now needs to raise a sum of £50,000 if it is to remain open.

Many companies, both local and national, are taking part in both the football event and the fun day. Solar Sunshades has been the latest company to announce its team to take part in the 12 hour tournament. The team includes:

    • Andrew Bowden (captain)
    • Rob jones
    • Bradley Robinson
    • Roger Timms
    • David Gould

When asked his thoughts on the event and his opinion on the charity itself, Andrew had the following to say:

“First and foremost, it’s a fantastic cause to be involved in. We were relatively unaware of Y Bont and the work they do before we entered the event. It’s a charity that simply cannot afford to close down and one that people need to be more aware of. Hopefully this event will raise overall awareness of Y Bont and the funds they currently need.

The football tournament is a great idea, it will be a really fun day and we’ll be raising money for a cherished local charity at the same time. We’ve previously done some fundraising for schools by holding golf days and sponsoring concerts, and in terms of charity work some of my colleagues have done individual fundraising for Ty Hafan and sufferers of Multiple Sclerosis. We’re just really happy to be involved to be honest.

We’ve not got any particular tactics for Sunday – we’re just delighted to get a team out! We haven’t done too much preparation – a few of the boys play Saturday football in the amateur league for Porthcawl Town, though – so hopefully we’ll be able to take a few by surprise and put ourselves in with a shout of winning that trophy!”

The attitude towards the tournament and the support given by the various companies involved has been absolutely fantastic so far, and by the sounds of the things, Solar could be the dark horses of the tournament.

So if you would like to see how the action unfolds on Sunday, then why not come down with your family? With a tonne of fun activities on offer and the promise of beautiful weather – it will undoubtedly be a day to remember.
