Sainsbury’s Bridgend Enter AgentPro’s Charity Football Tournament

Sainsbury’s Bridgend are taking part in the 12 hour 5-a-side football tournament that AgentPro have organised in order to raise money for disabled children’s charity, Y Bont, taking place on July 27th.

Y Bont needs to raise the grand sum of £50,000 by the end of the summer if it is to remain open.

As soon as Sainsbury’s heard about the event they didn’t waste any time in putting forward two teams.

    The Teams

Team A consists of the day shift staff and is captained by Tom Davies. They will be known as the ‘Spartans’

The rest of the team include:

    • Mark Burbidge
    • Dan Powell
    • Aled Hopkins
    • Dave Landers
    • Christian Murphy
    • Alex Davies
    • Allyn Jones

The team’s striker, Mark Burbidge, had the following to say, “We’ll be playing with a lot of pace – or at least that’s the plan! It’s going to be a long day so we’ll be taking on the nutrients and keeping ourselves hydrated. The event is for a great cause, so bearing that in mind will be more than enough to keep us going!”

Team B, or the ‘Warriors’ as they will be known, consist of the night shift staff:

    • Michael Jones – Midfield
    • Nicky Jones – Goalkeeper/striker
    • Ryan Jones – Defender
    • Sion Phipps – Midfield
    • Sam Gilette – Defender
    • Christian Jones – Striker

Team captain, Michael Jones, is quietly confident with his team’s ability and isn’t afraid to employ tactics similar to football managing legend, Jose Mourinho.

Michael commented: “We’ll be quite happy to sit back and hit them on the break. And if necessary we’ll do a Mourinho and park the bus – we really want to win at the end of the day. It’s for a fantastic cause, one which is very close to our hearts, so we’ll be giving it our everything!”

With bragging rights on offer and pride at stake, this is a clash definitely not to be missed.

    Previous Charity Work

This isn’t the first time Sainsbury’s Bridgend has helped Y Bont. For the past 10 years, the store has invited the charity to a Christmas party where the coffee shop is cordoned off especially and the children get to see Santa and receive gifts. They also offer a variety of games and bring in a DJ to play Christmas tunes.

This year, for the very first time, Y Bont bid to become Sainsbury’s nominated charity. They reached the shortlist for the final three – along with KPC and Ogmore Valley Rapid Response – and we’re delighted to officially announce that they were chosen. This means they will be given priority to raise money in-store, which is fantastic news.

As well as helping Y Bont, Sainsbury’s Bridgend has aided other charities and causes both as a store and individually. The store has previously raised a massive £14,500 for Healing the Wounds, a charity that helps sufferers of post-traumatic stress. It also raised £2,500 in a single day for a cause involving a local boy who suffered an asthma attack that then led to brain damage.

Other events that individual staff has taken part in include a hill run for Help for Heroes and a 5km run wearing sumo-wrestler suits in aid of Sport Relief.

    Help a Great Cause

As well as the football tournament we’re holding a family fun day with a variety of activities and stalls on offer. If you’re interested in helping out a fantastic cause – having heaps of fun while doing so – then why not come along on Sunday July 27th?

Entry is completely free of charge and there are a tonne of things going on that you and your family can enjoy!
